Lighting Portfolio

My first Co-op assignment was a rich experience involving application of the Digital Lumens Corporation’s advanced high-bay LED lighting and control system, and preparation of training documents for designers and facility managers.

Problem

Standard high-bay lighting systems – typically intended for high ceiling applications in warehouses and manufacturing plants – are lower efficiency and have limited ability for location and fixture-level control. This often has resulted in large lighting systems that either remain on during periods of low occupancy and cannot readily be modulated for real-time needs and optimized operation.

Actions

  • Deploy advanced, state-of-the-art digital LED fixtures with directly addressable ballasts for optimized control

  • Review photometric characteristics of specified lighting fixtures to determine spatial patterns of lighting output

  • Create customized lighting layout designs that fully address facility needs and lighting schedules

  • Create a portfolio of lighting control schedules to ensure lighting output is consistent with actual lighting needs and facility schedules

  • Assess energy savings relative to baseline lighting systems

Results

Specified lighting designs provided to client facility management and their designers were optimized for both performance and energy efficiency. With the Digital Lumen designs, clients minimized energy use while experiencing lighting that was controlled to be consistent with actual facility usage.
